How To Apply

  1. Visit the City of Ames' City Employment - Current Job Opportunities webpage.
  2. Click on the position you wish to apply for; and then
  3. Click the "Apply" link to fill out an application.
  4. If you applied for a transit driver position, please attend the next scheduled 'Written Test Session' listed below. 

Please note that the City of Ames (CyRide) does not accept paper copies of applications; therefore you must submit your application online. Please create an online account with your own unique e-mail address. Written Test Sessions Held: (Transit Driver Applicants ONLY) 

Transit Driver applicants that have filled out an online application will need to also take/pass a written test prior to the interview process.  These tests are offered as shown below:

  • No driving experience needed; get paid while we train you
  • Perfect job for university students or semi-retired persons
  • Work between 15 - 35 hours per week (you build your own schedule)
  • CyRide staff trains drivers to obtain their Commercial Drivers License (pre-trip vehicle inspection test, skills test and driving test)
  • CyRide drivers provide transportation to nearly 7 million passengers in Ames each year
  • Articulated (60-foot) buses hold approximately 110 passengers each while large (40-foot) buses accommodate approximately 65 passengers
  • Flexible schedule

Job Requirements

  • Good driving record (no more than two accidents or moving violations the last three years)
  • Must be able to pass a written exam and obtain Commercial Driver's Permit
    Learn how to obtain your CLP (General CDL Knowledge test, Air Brake Endorsement, Passenger Endorsement)
  • Must live in OR near Ames (please call CyRide at 515-292-1100 or the City of Ames Human Resources department 515-239-5199 for the exact boundaries)
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen
  • Must be at least 18 years old

Transit Driver Starting Wage (Part-Time)

  • $14.84 per hour (More than 20 hours per week); $12.63 (Less than 20 hours per week)
    • $18.07 per hour after 3120 hours worked (B Step)
    • $19.54 per hour after 8320 hours worked (C Step)
  • Transit Driver Bonuses $250 (paid in two installments) 

    • HIRING BONUS - $150 (Eligible first day of out of service training; included in next paycheck)
    • TRAINING BONUS - $100 (Eligible upon completion of driver training program AND upon first day of work in an assigned run) 


    • Paid vacation and sick leave available for employees working more than 20 hours with quantity of vacation and sick leave hours based on 1/2 time, 3/4 time or full time status.     • Sick leave is available after 6 months continuous employment.
    • ISU students working for CyRide now receive preference to sign up for classes on the "first day of their year-in-school classification" (veterinary medicine/graduate, senior, junior, sophomore, freshman) as opposed to when eligible based on total credits and current term credits.  This allows employees to have an earlier opportunity to get signed up for specific classes they need for that semester.  Spring/fall registration start dates for each classification can be found online at
